The videos on YouTube Kids are screened by a mix of automated filters, human review, and feedback from parents to protect the app's youngest users. However, no system is perfect, and YouTube Kids is constantly working to improve its safeguards and offer more features to help parents create the right experience for their families.

Parents and caregivers can customize their child's experience with Parental Controls. They can limit screen time by setting a time limit for how long their kids can watch and help encourage their transition from watching to doing. Parents can keep up with what their kids watch, simply by checking the watch it again page, and blocking a video or whole channel if they don’t like the video. Parents can also flag inappropriate content for review.

YouTube Kids allows parents and caregivers to create individual experiences unique to each child. They can create up to eight kid profiles, each with their viewing preferences, video recommendations, and settings. Parents can select "Approved Content Only" mode if they want to handpick the videos, channels, and/or collections they've approved for their child to watch. Parents can also choose from preschool, younger, or older modes, which are age-appropriate and allow kids to explore their interests in a wide variety of topics, from songs, cartoons, crafts, to popular music and gaming videos.

It is essential to note that a parental setup is needed to ensure the best experience possible for your kid. Your kid may also see videos with commercial content from YouTube creators that are not paid ads. The Privacy Notice for Google Accounts managed with Family Link describes the app's privacy practices when your kid uses YouTube Kids with their Google Account. When your kid uses YouTube Kids without signing into their Google Account, the YouTube Kids Privacy Notice applies.
