About Google Assistant

Google Assistant is a voice control and productivity app that helps operate your phone and connected devices hands free.

Google Assistant fits everyday moments when your hands are busy or your eyes are on the road. It listens for simple voice prompts and gives quick help, from basic questions to routine tasks, without needing to touch the screen. Before you download Google Assistant, it helps to know that it works with the hotword “Hey Google” and offers built in privacy controls. It also extends beyond the phone to supported speakers, displays, TVs, wearables, and cars for consistent use across devices.

What Google Assistant offers

Hands free phone control

Use your voice to open apps, adjust volume, switch settings, or turn on the flashlight. Say “Hey Google” or “OK Google” to start, then ask to launch a favorite app or change your phone mode. Voice Match can personalize responses to your voice so you get results tailored to you on supported devices.

Calls, texts, and email

Stay in touch without reaching for the screen. You can ask Google Assistant to call a contact, dictate a text, or draft an email while you continue with other tasks. This helps when you are driving, cooking, or simply prefer to speak instead of type.

Reminders, directions, and quick answers

Set reminders, create shopping or to do lists, and ask for directions with a simple request. Google Assistant can add items to a list, find nearby places, and provide traffic information before you head out. It also answers everyday questions so you can get facts on the go.

Smart home control from anywhere

Manage compatible lights, thermostats, plugs, and more using your voice. After your devices are set up in the Google Home ecosystem, you can turn off lights, adjust the temperature, or check device status even when away from home. This brings the same voice routine from your phone to your living space.

Works with popular apps

Google Assistant connects to many services you already use. Ask to start a run with Nike Run Club, play a playlist on Spotify, send a message on Discord, check prices on Walmart, or log a meal in MyFitnessPal. You can review spending with Mint, browse Etsy listings, send a Snap, check Twitter, or order with Postmates by voice for quicker access through supported integrations.

Before you use Google Assistant

Voice Match helps Google Assistant recognize your voice for personalized answers on supported devices. You can review and manage your activity and voice recordings in settings, and you control when Google Assistant listens with simple toggles and hotword options. These built in privacy controls give you a clear way to manage your data and preferences.

Availability and device support

Google Assistant works on many Android phones and also extends to select speakers, smart displays, TVs, wearables, and compatible cars. Some features depend on device capabilities or require the Google Home ecosystem for smart home control. Certain services may need accounts or paid subscriptions to work by voice. If you prefer an installer, the Google Assistant APK can be used on supported Android devices that meet the app requirements.

Gemini in Google Assistant

You can choose to try Gemini, Google’s experimental AI experience formerly known as Bard, within Google Assistant for richer help in supported regions. Availability is rolling out and requires compatible devices and countries, so it may not appear for every user. If you opt in and later change your mind, open settings to switch back to Google Assistant at any time without deleting your data.

Get started with Google Assistant on Android

Setup takes a few minutes and follows familiar prompts on your phone. After installing the Google Assistant APK, you can enable voice activation and personalize it to your routine. These steps outline the flow from first open to everyday use.

  1. Open Google Assistant, sign in if asked, and grant microphone and notification permissions so voice features can work properly.
  2. Next, turn on “Hey Google” and set up Voice Match to teach the app your voice for personalized responses on supported devices.
  3. Then say “Hey Google” or “OK Google” and try a basic command like “open camera,” “set a reminder,” or “call Mom” to confirm activation.
  4. After that, connect smart lights or thermostats in the Google Home app, and return to Google Assistant to control them by voice.
  5. Finally, link supported services in settings or in their partner apps to use commands like starting a run, playing music, or sending a message; you can also opt in to Gemini and switch back in settings anytime.
