Hanuman Chalisa is a devotional song based on Lord Hanuman as the model devotee, it is written by Mahakavi Goswami Tulsidas in the sixteenth century in praise of Lord Hanuman.

The song is called a Chalisa as it contains forty (Chalisa in Hindi) verses. The structure of the poem is extremely simple and rhythmic, thus making it all the more popular. The word "chālisā" is derived from "chālis" in Hindi, which means 40, as the Hanuman Chalisa has 40 verses.

Reciting Hanuman Chalisa also helps in overcoming the bad effects of the Saturn.It is said that the recitation of the Hanuman Chalisa at night has some miraculous effect on the person. However, there are many people especially men who take bath early in the morning on Tuesdays and Saturdays, and then recite the Hanuman Chalisa.

The structure of the poem is extremely simple and rhythmic, thus making it all the more popular. The poem praises Lord Hanuman’s strength and kindness and recounts the Lord’s great deeds.

Lord Hanuman is well known for his extreme devotion to Lord Rama. Lord Hanuman is always depicted in the Indian folklaire as an icon of true devotion and a symbol of the power of true devotion and chastity.

Many stories from the Indian literature tell the tales of Lord Hanuman protecting devotees of Lord Rama and helping those who seek him either spiritually or otherwise. Goswami Tulasidas has written these lines in respect of Lord Hanuman's great character, in praise of his powers and also devotion.

The author says in the last stanza of the Chalisa that whoever chants it with full devotion to Hanuman, will have Hanuman's grace. Amongst the Hindus, it is a very popular belief that chanting the Hanuman Chalisa invokes Hanuman's divine intervention in grave problems, including those concerning evil spirits.
