The Spirit is a person and not merely a force. But, when we start on page one of the Bible, before creation ever even began, we see a depiction of the spirit of God hovering over the dark, disordered waters of the earth, ready to begin spreading goodness and creation. In the Bible, any time we see a description of the spirit of God, such as what is depicted in the first few verses of the Bible, the Hebrew word "ruakh" is used. Ruakh can describe an invisible, powerful energy, and is necessary for life, making "The Spirit" a fitting description for the Spirit of God.

Of course, the religious leaders of the time see these actions as a threat, and they have Jesus killed. Still, though, God's spirit is at work. When the disciples saw that Jesus had risen from the grave, they proclaimed that He glowed with the spirit of God.

When Jesus appeared to His closest followers, He breathed into them the Holy Spirit, empowering them too to spread God's goodness throughout the world. Soon after that, God's spirit comes over all of His followers. Today, through Christ and the power He has given His followers, God's spirit continues to hover over a dark and chaotic world, slowly healing it and working towards the day when it is restored to its former glory.

The Holy Spirit is a wonderful person, friend, guide, counselor and teacher. He was with God the Father and Jesus at Creation, and it was through His power that the commands of God the Father were manifested. God said let there be light and the Holy Spirit brought the light and all the creation into being.

The Holy Spirit was with Jesus in full measure while He was on this earth. He guided Jesus under God the Father's direction in His everyday life. It was through the power of the Holy Spirit and the strong desire and determination and love of Jesus that He did not sin while on earth. Jesus hated sin!

We, as Christians need to learn about the Holy Spirit and let him move with power in our lives. He will bring us joy as we never knew it before. As the Catechism of the Catholic Church reminds us, [Prayer] is the action of God and of man, springing forth from both the Holy Spirit and ourselves, wholly directed to the Father, in union with the human will of the Son of God made man (CCC 2564).

One beautiful and ancient prayer to the Holy Spirit was composed by St. Augustine, a holy bishop who lived in the 4th century. He had a particular way with words, and his prayer to the Holy Spirit is one that can lift up an uninspired soul to God.
