Sant Tukaram was a poet-saint and pioneered the Bhakti movement in Maharashtra. His poems, which are referred to as Abhangas in the local dialect of Marathi, are revered all across India. His 'Keertans', which are essentially spiritual songs are also quite popular. Sant Tukaram was a devotee of Vithoba, an avataar or Lord Vishnu.

Abhanga poetry, is a Marathi genre of literature that mixes folk stories with deeper spiritual meanings. His work is compiled in 'Tukaram Gatha', in Marathi language. It contains more than 4500 abhangas.
