On July 15, they won the final with a score of 4 goals to 2 against Croatia, 20 years after the 1998 world title.

France are the first team since Brazil in 2002 to go through the knockout phase of the World Cup without playing extra time and the first to score four goals in the final since Brazil in 1970. Deschamps, captain during the 1998 edition played in France, became the third player in history to win the most prestigious competition as a player and as a coach. This victory allows the French team to take first place in the world rankings on August 16, 2018.
