A damaged liver generates new tissue to heal itself, but a cirrhotic liver is unable to regenerate properly because it begins to replace itself with connective fiber and alter its structure.

Early-stage cirrhosis can be reversed with treatment of its underlying cause, but late-stage cirrhosis is usually irreversible, and calls for liver transplant. If not addressed, cirrhosis can eventually lead to liver failure and/or cancer. Knowing the signs of cirrhosis will help you catch the condition in its early, treatable stage.
