Understanding Fasting
Linguistically, fasting is defined as refraining from something. The condition for a valid Ramadhan fast is to refrain from anything that can cancel it, accompanied by an intention and carried out from sunrise to sunset.
Understanding Ramadan Fasting
Ramadan fasting is the implementation of the fourth Pillar of Faith which has been ordered by Allah SWT to all His faithful servants.
Allah has said in Q.S. Al-Baqarah verse 183, which means: "O you who believe, fasting is enjoined on all of you as it was enjoined on those before you so that you may attain piety."
So, from the Word of Allah SWT above, it can be concluded that fasting during Ramadan is obligatory, where this is a form of human responsibility to its creator directly and activities that involve the hablum minallah aspect.
However, fasting during Ramadan also has a very close connection between one human being and another, such as the emergence of a feeling of sympathy and a sense of togetherness, the emergence of a spirit to help each other, and much more. Apart from that, fasting is a form of Allah's provisions that must be carried out by every believer, where in Islamic law the purpose of fasting is to improve the quality of our piety.
Apart from verse 183, in Q.S. Al-Baqarah verse 185 also seems very clear about the obligations for Muslims in observing the fast of Ramadan "The month of Ramadan, the month in which the Qur'an was revealed (beginning) as a guide for humans and explanations regarding that guidance and the distinction (between the right and the vanity). Therefore, whoever among you is present (in the country where he lives) in that month, let him fast during that month, and whoever is sick or on a journey (and then breaks the fast), then (it is obligatory for him to fast), as many days as leaving it, on other days. Allah desires ease for you, and does not desire hardship for you. And let you make the number sufficient and let you glorify Allah for His guidance given to you, so that you may be grateful" (QS. Al Baqarah: 185)
