किसी रोग के होने या चोट लगने पर किसी अप्रशिक्षित व्यक्ति द्वारा जो सीमित उपचार किया जाता है उसे प्राथमिक चिकित्सा (First Aid) कहते हैं। इसका उद्देश्य कम से कम साधनों में इतनी व्यवस्था करना होता है कि चोटग्रस्त व्यक्ति को सम्यक इलाज कराने की स्थिति में लाने में लगने वाले समय में कम से कम नुकसान हो। अतः प्राथमिक चिकित्सा प्रशिक्षित या अप्रशिक्षित व्यक्तिओं द्वारा कम से कम साधनों में किया गया सरल उपचार है। कभी-कभी यह जीवन रक्षक भी सिद्ध होता है।

प्राथमिक उपचार आकस्मिक दुर्घटना के अवसर पर उन वस्तुओं से सहायता करने तक ही सीमित है जो उस समय प्राप्त हो सकें। प्राथमिक उपचार का यह ध्येय नहीं है कि प्राथमिक उपचारक चिकित्सक का स्थान ग्रहण करे। इस बात को अच्छी तरह समझ लेना चाहिए कि चोट पर दुबारा पट्टी बाँधना तथा उसके बाद का दूसरा इलाज प्राथमिक उपचार की सीमा के बाहर है। प्राथमिक उपचार का उत्तरदायित्व किसी डाक्टर द्वारा चिकित्सा संबंधी सहायता प्राप्त होने के साथ ही समाप्त हो जाता है, परंतु उसका कुछ देर तक वहाँ रुकना आवश्यक है, क्योंकि डाक्टर को सहायक के रूप में उसकी आवश्यकता पड़ सकती है।

It includes initial intervention in a serious condition prior to professional medical help being available, such as performing CPR while awaiting an ambulance, as well as the complete treatment of minor conditions, such as applying a plaster to a cut. First aid is generally performed by the layperson, with many people trained in providing basic levels of first aid, and others willing to do so from acquired knowledge. Mental health first aid is an extension of the concept of first aid to cover mental health.
