Learn to read and write the Sütterlin script

With the SütterlinTrainer you can learn to read and write Sütterlin. It is specifically tailored to the needs of genealogists and people interested in genealogy. The app contains the following areas and functions:

1. Learn Sütterlin

There are 10 texts here, dating from around 1911-1940, where you can tap on the word and you will see the transcription of that word below in modern script. This applies to all words in the texts.

2. Sütterlin transcription exercises

Your knowledge is required in this area. You can carry out a total of 66 word transcriptions with words from the areas of documents, registry offices, professions and large cities. It will show you whether your result was right or wrong. If it was wrong, the correct word is displayed.

The transcription exercises have a scoring system that allows you to see how much points you scored on the exercise. You can also reset the points for a new practice session with a button.

3. The Sütterlin exercise texts contain 10 texts from the period between 1911 and 1940, the heyday of the Sütterlin script. They are funny anecdotes that you will enjoy. First you see the original Sütterlin text and below it the transcription. You can use the Scale button to enlarge the text slightly and reduce it to 50 percent with a LongClick.

4. Learning to write Sütterlin offers you the opportunity to trace gray printed letters in three different colors (red, blue, black) on a canvas and thus practice writing. You will find all the letters of the alphabet there and can go forward or back using buttons. The canvas has a delete function if you want to start over.

5. Write your own words

In this area you can write your own words in a text field; a slider can be used to reduce and enlarge the words or sentences. The tool has a delete function for the text.
