POS-ISLAMISM is a new term for a new phenomenon at the level of Islamic political thought and movement among Middle Eastern Muslims, especially Iran and Egypt. This book is a response to today's deep disquiet, the global march of "Muslim rage." He examines contemporary Islamic struggles by exploring the relationship between religion and societal trends and movements. As a starting point, I pose the simple question of "is Islam compatible with democracy" by pointing out that the realization of democratic ideals in Islamic societies needs to transcend the "essence of Islam" rather than the intellectual convictions and political capacities of Muslims. How to deal with individuals, groups and movements who obey "sacred" commandments; the tendency of faith, whether tolerant or repressive, democratic or authoritarian, is determined primarily by the attributes of faith. Questions about democratic governance then become one of the agendas of political struggles rather than issues of religious scriptures, even though religion is often propagated to legitimize or restrain political domination.

By focusing on Middle Eastern Muslims, this book explores the struggles of various movements, movements that interpret religion to support social and political change, to legitimize authoritarian rule, or conversely, construct an inclusive faith that embraces democratic government. By comparing the history of religious politics in Iran and Egypt over the past three decades, I intend to show in detail how and under what conditions these specific societal movements were able or not to convert Islam to embrace a democratic ethos.
