What is mechatronic engineering?

The intent of mechatronics is to produce design solutions that unify each of these various subfields. Initially, the field of mechatronics was meant to be nothing more than a combination of mechanics and electronics, hence the name being a portmanteau of mechanics and electronics; however, as the complexity of technical systems continues to grow, the definition has been expanded to cover more technical areas.

The word mechatronics is of Japanese-English origin and was coined by Tetsuro Mori, an engineer at Yaskawa Electric Corporation. The word mechatronics was registered as a trademark by the company in Japan under the registration number "46-32714" in 1971. The company subsequently released the rights to use the word to the public, and the word began to be used globally. Today the word is translated into many languages and is considered an essential term for the advanced auto industry.

Many people treat mechatronics as a modern buzzword synonymous with automation, robotics, and electromechanical engineering.

The French standard NF E 01-010 provides the following definition: "an approach aimed at the synergistic integration of mechanics, electronics, control theory, and computer science in the design and manufacture of products, to improve and/or optimize their functionality".
