Deep Purple was formed in Hertfordshire in 1968 by Chris Curtis who later recruited Jon Lord and Ritchie Blackmore. This group was originally named Roundabout. The name of Deep Purple proposed by Ritchie Blackmore is taken from the title of favorite song Ritchie Blackmore's grandmother.

first album SHADES OF DEEP PURPLE successfully penetrated the United States and achieved success there.
