Bachchan Saheb was born on 27 November 1907 in a Kayastha family of village Babu Patti, district Pratapgarh, Uttar Pradesh. His father's name was Pratap Narayan Srivastava and his mother's name was Saraswati Devi. In his childhood, his parents used to call him Bachchan, which literally means 'child'. Dr. Harivansh Rai Bachchan's early life was spent in village Babu Patti. Harivansh Rai Bachchan's surname was actually Srivastava, but due to the name he was called since childhood, his surname became Bachchan.
