Skilled engineers travelled across the continent and shared their knowledge of warfare and fortifications. Defence lines evolved as rapidly as techniques of attack. Some formed borders that remain today, while others are long forgotten.

In 2012, the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to the European Union to mark longstanding peace between nations. Yet what military heritage has lost in terms of purpose, it has gained it importance. It today stands as a unique testimony to the course of European history and to human ingenuity.
