Piranha Plant is available free for everyone who buys Super Smash Bros Ultimate before the end of January 2019.
However, purchasing the game isn't enough. Whether you buy it from retail or digitally from the eShop, you have to perform extra steps to get the Piranha Plant code - specifically claiming your Gold Points from the Switch's menu screen.
If you bought Super Smash Bros Ultimate on the eShop then your points are claimed automatically - your Piranha Plant code will be automatically emailed to the address registered with your Nintendo Account.
If you bought Super Smash Bros Ultimate physically you have to first insert the cartridge, select the game icon on the Switch's game menu, press the + (plus) button.
