******************** THE ORIGIN & HISTORY OF ADULT CONTEMPORARY POP MUSIC ********************

Adult Contemporary (or simply AC) is a genre of music which included the 1960s vocal, 1970s soft rock music until the present day’s ballad-rich music scene, with varying scales of influence from rock, easy listening, rhythm and blues, and soul. AC is primarily an extension of the popular 1960s and 1970s’ easy listening and rock styles, with a bit of modification that manifests the developments seen in the pop/rock music scene over the years.

Adult contemporary music typically has “lush, soothing and highly polished qualities” that puts an emphasis on harmonies and melodies. This music type is rich in romantic ballads that are melodic and pleasurable to listen to, making it suitable enough to be used as background music.

In terms of instruments, AC makes use of mostly acoustic instruments like pianos, saxophones, and acoustic guitars are used. Bass guitar, electric guitars, synthesizers, and drum machines can also be utilized. In the course of time, Adult Contemporary has evolved and formed sub-genres like "soft AC" (also referred to as "lite AC"), “rhythmic AC”, "hot AC", "urban AC", and "Christian AC."
