The core idea behind the game was to combine the two concepts in a cohesive way, such that the best properties of the two genres complement each other.
In a nutshell the gameplay of Garrison Automata requires the player to defend 1 primary objective and 2 secondary objectives from waves of hostile AI. The player loses if he dies or if the primary objective is destroyed.
