The People's Republic of China, also known simply as China, is the largest country in East

Asia and the second most populous country in the world, with more than 1.4 billion

inhabitants, almost a fifth of the Earth's population, surpassed only by India . It is a one-party

socialist people's republic. In the constitution, it describes itself as a multi-party system of

political cooperation and consultation under the leadership of the Communist Party of China

and as a "people's democratic dictatorship led by the working class and based on the

alliance of workers and peasants". It has jurisdiction over twenty-two provinces, five

autonomous regions (Xinjiang, Inner Mongolia, Tibet, Ningxia and Quancim), four

municipalities (Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai and Xunking) and two Special Administrative

Regions with relative autonomy (Hong Kong and Macau). The capital of the PRC is Beijing.
