So far, the writing of Islamic history in the archipelago has used written records, so that the physical remains have been neglected. This book fills that void by presenting the history of Islam in the archipelago from an archaeological standpoint.

Uka Tjandrasasmita was the first archaeologist to enter the realm of Islamic archeology. He has an archaeological background, masters supporting languages, and is keen in analyzing historical evidence. In the 1980s he became Director of the Directorate of Protection and Development of Archaeological History, Directorate General of Culture, and did a lot of research, especially on Islamic heritage sites in Indonesia.

Through Uka's various researches, which are the contents of this book, the history of Nusantara Islam gains new insights that are different from anything that has been written so far.

This book is composed of three major sections, respectively Islamic Archeology and Cosmopolitanism Dynamics; Islamic Archeology and Local Dynamics in the Archipelago; and Islamic Archeology and Archipelago Manuscripts.
