Plotinus (c. 203-270) was a major philosopher of late antiquity and founder of the Neoplatonic school of philosophy.

Main source of information on the life and work of Plotinus represents the work of his student Porphyry. Plotinus was born in Lykopoli of Upper Egypt around 203 AD and spent his youth in Alexandria. At the age of 28 began to deal with the philosophy near the Alexandrian teachers, however, the only one who inspired him was the Platonic philosopher Ammonius Sakkas.
